Helios St. Elisabeth Hospital Oberhausen: Back on your feet after bilateral hip surgery

Daniela Wehrmann had an artificial hip joint (hip TEP) fitted on both sides in just one operation - and she was already taking her first steps the day after the procedure.

For a long time, every step was torture for Daniela Wehrmann. "There were days when I could hardly walk because of the pain, let alone work," says the 58-year-old. In the consultation hours - initially the pain outpatient clinic - at the Helios St. Elisabeth Hospital in Oberhausen, she became aware of the Center for Endoprosthetics. After examinations and the scrutinizing gaze of the center's director and head physician, Dr. Rainer Weber, it quickly became clear that the osteoarthritis had irreparably damaged the joint cartilage on both sides of her hip. This was causing the pain on movement. "It couldn't go on like this. We had to get a new hip," recalls the Oberhausen resident.

Hip endoprostheses (hip TEP) are usually implanted at intervals of three to six months in cases of advanced osteoarthritis - first on one side of the joint, then on the other. This means two operations, two hospital stays and two rehab sessions.

"With our experienced surgical team in Oberhausen, we can replace both hip joints simultaneously in a single operation for patients like Ms. Wehrmann. This saves an enormous amount of time during recovery - and therefore also improves our patients' quality of life."

No sooner said than done: "I had my operation on Monday and a physiotherapist helped me take my first steps on the walking frame on Tuesday. I wouldn't have thought that possible," says Daniela Wehrmann, amazed. Even stairs were no longer an obstacle with physiotherapeutic support shortly after the operation. An important exercise, according to the 58-year-old: "After all, I have a lot of stairs at home too."

Only a few clinics in Germany offer bilateral hip replacement in a single operation.

"This requires a well-coordinated team that has mastered its craft, years of experience and high-quality prosthetic material. Because a longer operation always means a higher risk,"

explains Dr. Rainer Weber. The prerequisite is therefore - in addition to the hip condition - that the patient is in good health, so that the longer anesthesia can be carried out with minimal risk.
