New cardiac catheterization laboratories at Helios Hospital Bonn/Rhein-Sieg

The cardiology department at Helios Hospital Bonn/Rhein-Sieg opens two new cardiac catheterization laboratories after several months of construction. Patients with coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, arrhythmias or valvular heart disease can be optimally treated in the large procedure rooms with state-of-the-art imaging.

Complex constrictions of the coronary vessels or an acute infarction - if the heart is not working properly, this can have life-threatening consequences. Patients with acute and chronic heart diseases can now be examined and treated in one step at Helios Hospital Bonn/Rhein-Sieg in two new cardiac catheterization laboratories (HKL) equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology.

"Thanks to the examination technology according to the latest medical standards and our experienced team, we can make an important contribution to improving rapid heart attack care in the region,"

Chief Physician Prof. Dr. med. René Andrié is convinced.

Janine Reuter, head of the nursing HKL, adds:

"The two HKLs form the heart of our department. This is because modern imaging is ideally suited to treat even complicated findings, such as in the case of a heart attack, optimally with all procedures."

In the cardiac catheterization laboratory, the examining cardiologist receives real-time images of the heart and coronary vessels in high-resolution quality via several monitors. This enables targeted diagnosis and treatment. In order for this to function smoothly, rooms for preparing and monitoring patients as well as for the technology belong in each case next to the actual procedure room. The various cardiological interventions require optimal image quality and, above all, the combination of X-ray procedures with ultrasound images. The new HKLs at Hardtberg combine even higher image quality with significantly lower radiation exposure for patients and staff.

Clinic Managing Director Rungfa Saligmann is also pleased about the expansion of the range of services: "With total costs of around six million euros, the cardiac catheterization laboratories are a major investment for the future of our clinic. Moreover, it was a challenging task to implement this in parallel to the daily hospital routine and the special conditions during the Corona pandemic. I would like to thank everyone involved for their great commitment to this very important project."

The Bonn Department of Cardiology, Rhythmology and Electrophysiology offers the entire spectrum of invasive treatment of acute and chronic coronary heart disease. An important focus is also on the therapy of cardiac arrhythmias, such as ablations and pacemaker implantations, as the team at Hardtberg is one of the few hospitals in the region to specialize in the field of electrophysiology. To enable short distances to the Central Emergency Department and the laboratory, the new HVACs were integrated into the existing building. A special mobile container was previously used for a transitional period until completion of the building. This was specially delivered from England in March 2022 as a heavy transport and housed a fully functional cardiac catheterization laboratory.
