Helios Heart Center Leipzig: Quick reactions in case of cardiac emergencies

Today, the Heart Center Leipzig opened its expanded and modernized Chest Pain Unit (CPU) together with a Syncope and Rhythm Unit after previous renovation work. Colloquially known as the chest pain outpatient clinic, the certified Chest Pain Unit is available around the clock for cardiac emergencies.

When the heart is out of rhythm, when the chest hurts, when the air is scarce, the most urgent thing is usually to act fast. Minutes can be crucial in averting danger to a person's life. As an important point of contact for those affected, the Chest Pain Unit at the Heart Center Leipzig is available around the clock, seven days a week, to ensure rapid clarification and help. The Chest Pain Unit is certified by the German Society of Cardiology (DKG). It bears the seal of quality "Chest Pain Unit - DGK-certified" as a predicate for guaranteeing a consistently high standard of quality.

Together with Prof. Dr. med. Holger Thiele, Deputy Medical Director and Director of the University Clinic for Cardiology - Helios Endowed Professorship, Nursing Director Susann Gebhardt and Ward Manager Juliane Burck-Hammer, Clinic Managing Director Matthias Hirsekorn opened the modernized unit.

"I am pleased that we are able to put the expanded Chest Pain Unit into operation today. The Chest Pain Unit is an important point of contact for our patients in case of cardiac emergencies."

says Clinic Managing Director Matthias Hirsekorn.

At peak times, up to 60 patients a day visit the Chest Pain Unit. The Chest Pain Unit at the Heart Center Leipzig is open around the clock, not only on weekdays but also on Sundays and public holidays.

The renovation has optimized the processes of the Chest Pain Unit, shortened waiting times for patients and increased the number of admissions. In addition to the capacity expansion, the Chest Pain Outpatient Clinic has received modern, new equipment. All beds and couches are equipped with monitors so that the vital signs of the patients can be permanently monitored. The move to the immediate vicinity of the cath lab also shortens distances so that action can be taken even more quickly in an emergency.

Patients with chest pain are admitted here to quickly clarify a possible heart attack, for example. "I am very pleased that we can now react even faster and more efficiently thanks to the new premises and the improved location and equipment. Every second counts in a cardiac emergency. Short distances and fast processes therefore also help us to be able to act better. In addition to the Chest Pain Unit, we at the Heart Center Leipzig now have the unique selling point of being able to offer a Syncope Unit and a Rhythm Unit in one superordinate unit. These two units are the first of their kind in Germany," explains Prof. Dr. med. Holger Thiele, Deputy Medical Director and Director of the University Hospital for Cardiology - Helios Endowed Chair.
