Helios Hospital Siegburg - Interview with Prof. Dr. med. Marc Vorpahl

Prof. Dr. Marc Vorpahl has been the new Head of Cardiology, Rhythmology and Angiology at Helios Hospital Siegburg since October 1. In this interview, he explains what particularly fascinates him about the cardiology department and what he focuses on in his work for the Siegburg Heart Center.

"I see myself as an interventional cardiologist with a focus on the treatment of valvular heart disease"

Cardiology - always your dream specialty?

"You could definitely say that. Cardiology is a recurring theme in my life. During my civilian service in the care sector, I experienced how most heart attacks were treated with 1-2 weeks of bed rest. That is no longer conceivable today. During my studies, I did my doctorate at the interface of physiology and interventional cardiology. However, I could never imagine cardiology without cardiac surgery. I therefore completed my practical year in cardiovascular surgery during my medical studies. After my license to practice medicine, I spent some very formative years in interventional cardiology at the German Heart Center in Munich. During a research stay of several years in the USA, I also had the opportunity to help develop and study many of the cardiology devices in use today. I have been able to apply this experience to my work over the past ten years. At the Helios Heart Center Wuppertal - where I previously worked - I played a key role in establishing catheter-based treatment of heart valve diseases in everyday clinical practice."

Do you have a particular specialist "hobbyhorse"?

"As an interventional cardiologist specializing in the treatment of valvular heart disease, I see myself as an important part of the "heart team" at our hospital. For me, the focus is always on talking to patients and their relatives in order to be able to offer meaningful, individual treatment options that patients can 'go along with'. That can sometimes just mean listening."

What do you do to balance your work?

"I'm fascinated by the vibrant colors of the early Dutch painters, but also by the many possibilities of creating a garden. My wife also likes to plan a tour by bike."
