Helios Heart Center Leipzig: Girl from Friedensdorf successfully treated
9-year-old Safa from Afghanistan was successfully treated at the Heart Center Leipzig. The girl has been living in the Peace Village International in Oberhausen since the end of 2022. Her congenital heart defect was repaired thanks to donated treatment by the children's cardiology team at the Heart Center.
On April 23, little Safa was transferred from the Helios Clinic Pirna to the Heart Center Leipzig. Safa is 9 years old and was flown out of her home country of Afghanistan on a charter flight in November 2022 to receive good medical care in Germany. After an injury in her home country, she suffered severe burns, which were treated in Pirna. A congenital heart defect, a so-called atrial septal defect, was also discovered there.
Peace Village International contacted the Leipzig Heart Center and enquired about the girl's treatment. Prof. Dr. med. Ingo Dähnert, Director of the Department of Pediatric Cardiology, and Managing Director Matthias Hirsekorn immediately offered to treat Safa free of charge at the Heart Center. Together with Safa's caregiver at the Peace Village, M. Rossi, Prof. Dähnert also organized an occluder (umbrella), which was needed for the procedure and which was also provided free of charge by the Abbott company.
